Leica M10: Getting Better

I think the one thing that about the Leica M10 is that it did not make me a better photographer. In fact, there has not been one Leica that I have every owned that made me a photographer. People , don't be overhyped about this camera yet, due to its age, you will very likely experience board failure like I did to my two eos3....and their price went up like crazy which renders them not a feasible option. I would say ditch film camera completely especially due to the recent film price hike as well. I had sold my howtek D4000 drum scanner too for that matter

The Hexar RF was my first M-mount camera. I love it. The low magnification of the viewfinder makes for great eye relief for an eyeglass wearer like myself. I agree with you about the option of aperture priority, too. The speed it affords can often mean the difference between getting the shot or missing out on a moment. One area where we diverge, however, is the motor drive. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you completely concerning the hypothetical purist who objects to a motor-driven M-mount camera "on principle." I would just have preferred that the motor drive be optional. However, the designers included two features directly related to the motor drive which real gems. First, is the ability to pause the rewind of the film at end-of-roll. The camera senses when you reach roll's end and starts the rewind process automatically, but switching the camera off with the shutter mode dial surrounding the shutter release temporarily halts the process, which dutifully resumes once the camera is switched back on. In situations where the steady whir of the rewind motor might be inappropriate, this is very handy. On an occasion when I was shooting a musical performance with a Contax ST, I reached end-of-roll and the rather loud rewind on that camera drew a few icy glances from audience members. Another well-considered feature related to rewind is the brief pause after the rewind process is nearly complete. When the camera senses the film has come off the take up spool, it automatically pauses rewinding for a few seconds, giving the operator the opportunity to open the back or turn off the camera. This is a very welcome option I usually exercise for any film I intend to develop myself, as it eliminates the need to fish out the film from the can with a leader extractor. Another little quirk of the camera, which is only a minor annoyance, is the two-step whir it makes after a shutter actuation when the camera is set to single-shot mode. It's odd how that second little "whir" is not present when set to continuous mode. These are, of course, only minor quibbles for what is a wonderful picture-making machine which gives you entre into a world of extraordinary glass, including Konica's own small family of excellent KM and L-mount lenses.

Having started with a Canon AE-1, the EOS 3 was the last film camera I bought. I prolonged upgrading due to Canon changing the lens mount system rendering my FD fit lenses useless on the new camera. However, I am glad that I eventually made the change, as it means the EF lenses I am now using on my digital cameras all fit the EOS 3, which means I can still shoot film whenever the fancy takes me.

I have a V5 on my M10, and it only leaves that body to go on to my M4. I absolutely love 50mm and the f2 is more than enough for what I do with it. I think a 50 and a 21 is all anyone really needs M camera wise.

The M10 viewfinder is an improvement for sure, but I am not quite sure how much of an improvement the rest of the stuff are. Also the M10 is chrome plated so it doesn't show that beautiful M240 brassing effect, unless you have the rare black paint version.

I agree with you, Tim. That being said, there are a couple of other points besides the headline specs, which are probably not going to be used at all by most. First of all, motion cadence for video, which is more apparent than stills, where artifacts may not be visible for a single frame. "Healthier" frames make post post-stabilisation easier. Then there is the actual shooting experience of mirrorless with an EVF - not what it used to be in the SLR days (Actually started collecting older, cheaper ones, and just realising this more and more), and a global shutter with a 9.44M dot EVF should make this much better, at least in theory - unfortunately this is something that Every camera manufacturer cripples with their midrange models. Also really like the swivel-tilt screen. People can argue all day about which is better - this solves the issue, and it's not something that Canon may implement any time soon... In many ways, this is a more "complete" all-round camera that what they've did before, even though it is only the start of something that may get much more refined over time. That's where it's real value lies. Maybe the market will perceive it to be so specific, that demand will be low, so it will drop in value significantly - I would welcome that certainly.

It wasn't uncommon to shoot f/5.6 and use flash in darker environments to get the shot. Most photographers never really shot faster than f/4. It was unheard of back in the 70's and 80's

back in the day before digital cameras, wedding photographers used zone focusing and zone flash throughout the day. They/I would set focus and flash to say 8 ft and keep that distance.

Great video. As an RF owner I can comment as well. The things that might be problematic for some: - I find the viewfinder patch is a bit picky when it comes to eye placement. You need to be centered well in the VF or it can be tricky to focus. - The magnification is something like 0.6x which is probably not ideal for some. As an eyeglass wearer, its great for me though. - The film advance is not exactly loud, but its much louder than something like the Minolta CLE. Can't comment on Leica shutters ;) - Needs batteries, but they do last a long time. Good things: - Extremely fast film loading, and rewind, with option to leave the leader out if you want. - 1/4000 shutter speed! - build quality is fantastic. - AP auto + exposure comp - VF works well for glass wearers.

I was thinking to sell all my Sony gears & godox light to buy a Leica M10 or MP240 or M240? Which one will you recommend? I have been using my Sony A7iv + Minolta 58mm manual vintage lens more than my gm lens, & some people starts to question me why? I just don’t how to explain it to them but I feel more happy & aesthetic shooting portraits with the vintage lens. ❤ 😣

Great video! Fantastic Images! I went from a state of the art Nikon Z9 and Fuji XT5 / selling all my "modern" gear to getting two M240's. After testing a bunch of lenses including Leica's own Summilux, Zeiss and Voigtländer lenses I settled on Voigtländer Nokton 28 f1.5, Nokton 50 f1.2 and Leica's 90mm F2 APO. I found the 28mm was a little more versatile than the 35 for me. I'm a 50 guy and love the Nokton 50 1.2 - it's just incredible for the money. Wide open it's sharp but still has some great character and stopped down to F2 it's almost as sharp as the APO Lanthers I had been using. About that, I also tried the Voigtländer 35 F2 LANTHAR APO and 50 Lanthar APO which have to be two of the sharpest lenses, most CA free lenses I have used at any price. Just Amazing. That said I'm selling those two as I prefer a little more speed over absolute sharpness. Love my M240s and I think the look I get out of these is way more inline with the feeling of romantic nostalgia that I like to see on the images I shoot. + Liked and Subbed!

Found mine in unused in a camera store collection mid 1980. I used it very little. Now I can compare versions 2,3,4/5 and APO. My version 2 is in near perfect condition. 2 & 3 have no contrast difference I can see, but I have seen the stories. I consider 3 a very fine lens and it compares favorably with my APO 4 to 16. It is mounted on one M10, APO on the other.

What always stunned me about the 3 is that they went from a few AF points in previous models to 45 here! Later, that disappeared unless you bought the last 1 model … that many AF points did not appear in better models until the 5Dmk3 a zillion years later. Love the ergonomics on the Elan II and 7. I almost quit Canon after suffering the Digital Rebel’s clunky box and newer layout.

If you need lowlight performance, the M10 without a doubt. The ISO performance is drastically better. If you need fancier UI for some reason, it has that. Otherwise, the M10 offers almost nothing over the M240.
